Top Bushisms in the Category of: Groping For Clichés

A friend of mine, David Watson, coined the term "groping for clichés" to describe Hall of Famer Lou Brock's struggle while announcing St. Louis Cardinal baseball games in the early 1980s. "Groping for clichés" is funny because a professional announcer, speaker, teacher, or talk show host should be able to summon up clichés at will - that's why they're called clichés. The hard part is avoiding the clichés and saying something in your own words.

Here's President Bush, the leader of the free world, groping for clichés.

1. "And so during these holiday seasons, we thank our blessings." - George W. Bush, Fort Belvoir, VA, Dec. 10, 2004
2. "One year ago today, the time for excuse-making has come to an end." - George W. Bush, Washington, DC, Jan. 8, 2003

5. "And I am an optimistic person. I guess if you want to try to find something to be pessimistic about, you can find it, no matter how hard you look, you know?" - George W. Bush, Washington, DC, June 15, 2004
6. "One of the common denominators I have found is that expectations rise above that which is expected." - George W. Bush, Los Angeles, Sept. 27, 2000
7. "I think war is a dangerous place." - George W. Bush, Washington, DC, May 7, 2003
8. "And so, in my State of the - my State of the Union - or state - my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation - I asked Americans to give 4,000 years - 4,000 hours over the next - the rest of your life - of service to America. That's what I asked - 4,000 hours." - George W. Bush, Bridgeport, Conn., April 9, 2002 [AUDIO]
9. "[A]s you know, these are open forums, you're able to come and listen to what I have to say." - George W. Bush, Washington, DC, Oct. 28, 2003
10. "I mentioned early on that I recognize there are hurdles, and we're gonna achieve those hurdles." - George W. Bush, St. Louis, MO, Jan. 22, 2003 [AUDIO]
11. "There's no question that the minute I got elected, the storm clouds on the horizon were getting nearly directly overhead." - George W. Bush, Washington, DC, May 11, 2001
12. "My pro-life position is I believe there's life. It's not necessarily based in religion. I think there's a life there, therefore the notion of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness." - George W. Bush, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan. 23, 2001
13. "Well, all due in modesty, I thought I did a pretty good job myself of making it clear that he's [Saddam Hussein's] not disarming and why he should disarm." - George W. Bush, Washington, DC, Jan. 31, 2003
14. "A family in Allentown, Pennsylvania, I campaigned with them the other day... Under my plan, they get $1800 of tax relief. Under Vice President Gore's plan, they get $145 of tax relief. Now you tell me who stands on the side of the fence." - George W. Bush, first presidential debate, Boston, MA, Oct. 3, 2000 (And you tell me which side of the grass is always sitting on the greener fence.)
15. "As we work to keep the peace we've also got to work to make America a better place for all of us. I mean every single citizen. That means we've got to have an education system that is next to none." - George W. Bush, Denver, CO, Sep. 27, 2002 (Anyway you cut it, "next to none" can't be a good thing. The cliché the President was groping for was, of course, "second to none.")
